เมื่อวันที่ 27 กุมภาพันธ์ 2568 สถานกงสุลใหญ่ ณ นครซิดนีย์ จัดงานเสวนาหัวข้อ "Queer Cinema and Popular Culture from Thailand" ในโอกาสที่ภาพยนตร์ไทยเรื่อง “วิมานหนาม” ได้เข้าฉายในเทศกาลภาพยนตร์ Mardi Gras Film Festival ครั้งที่ 32 โดยนางหัทยา คูสกุล กงสุลใหญ่ ณ นครซิดนีย์ กล่าวเปิดงาน โดยงานครั้งนี้ได้รับเกียรติจากอาจารย์ Thomas Baudinette อาจารย์อาวุโสด้านวัฒนธรรมนานาชาติ จาก Macquarie University นางสาว Xueyin Wu นักศึกษาปริญญาเอกจาก School of International Studies, Macquarie University และนางสาว Rujeela Archarya แฟนคลับชาวออสเตรเลียที่ติดตามสื่อบันเทิงไทย มาร่วมเป็นวิทยากรในการเสวนาครั้งนี้

ในระหว่างการเสวนา อาจารย์ Thomas กล่าวถึงพัฒนาการของอุตสาหกรรมซีรีส์และภาพยนตร์ BL (Boy’s Love) และ GL (Girl’s Love) ของไทย ซึ่งมีการปรับเปลี่ยนเนื้อหาให้สอดคล้องกับบริบททางสังคมในแต่ละยุคสมัย จนได้รับความนิยมอย่างแพร่หลายในหลายประเทศ รวมถึงออสเตรเลีย ส่งผลให้เกิดกระแสความสนใจในวัฒนธรรมไทยและการบริโภคสื่อบันเทิงจากประเทศไทยในระดับนานาชาติ

นางสาว Xueyin นำเสนอการศึกษาวิจัยระดับปริญญาเอกของตน ภายใต้หัวข้อ "How does fan's engagement with Thai BL coupling fandom shape Chinese people's perception of gender and sexuality" ซึ่งวิเคราะห์บทบาทของ coupling fandom ในหมู่แฟนคลับชาวจีน และอิทธิพลของสื่อบันเทิงไทยที่มีต่อทัศนคติเกี่ยวกับเพศและอัตลักษณ์ทางเพศในสังคมจีน นอกจากนี้ เธอยังได้กล่าวถึงภาพลักษณ์ของตัวละคร LGBTQ+ ในซีรีส์และภาพยนตร์ไทย ตลอดจนปัจจัยที่ส่งเสริมให้สื่อประเภท BL และ GL ได้รับความนิยมอย่างแพร่หลายในประเทศจีน

นางสาว Rujeela แบ่งปันประสบการณ์ในฐานะแฟนคลับชาวออสเตรเลียที่ติดตามและสนับสนุนอุตสาหกรรมบันเทิงไทย โดยกล่าวถึงความเชื่อมโยงระหว่างวัฒนธรรมไทยและกลุ่มผู้ชมต่างชาติ ตลอดจนบทบาทของซีรีส์และภาพยนตร์ไทยในการส่งเสริมความเข้าใจและยอมรับในความหลากหลายทางเพศ

ผู้เข้าร่วมงานซึ่งรวมถึงนักวิชาการ ผู้สนใจในอุตสาหกรรมภาพยนตร์ และแฟนคลับสื่อบันเทิงไทย แลกเปลี่ยนมุมมองและข้อคิดเห็นอย่างกว้างขวาง โดยงานเสวนาครั้งนี้ไม่เพียงแต่เปิดโอกาสให้มีการพูดคุยเกี่ยวกับอุตสาหกรรมบันเทิงไทยเท่านั้น แต่ยังเป็นเวทีสำคัญในการส่งเสริมความตระหนักรู้เกี่ยวกับสิทธิและความเท่าเทียมของกลุ่ม LGBTQ+ ในระดับสากลอีกด้วย

On 27 February 2025, the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Sydney hosted a panel discussion titled "Queer Cinema and Popular Culture from Thailand" to celebrate the 32nd Mardi Gras Film Festival. The event was officially opened by Mrs. Hataya Kusakul, Consul-General of Thailand in Sydney, and featured distinguished speakers, including Dr. Thomas Baudinette, Senior Lecturer in International Cultures at Macquarie University; Ms. Xueyin Wu, PhD Candidate from the School of International Studies, Macquarie University, and Ms. Rujeela Archarya, an Australian fan of Thai media.

During the discussion, Dr. Thomas Baudinette provided insights into the evolution of Thailand’s BL (Boy’s Love) and GL (Girl’s Love) series and films, highlighting how their narratives have adapted over time to reflect as well as inspire social changes. He noted the increasing global popularity of Thai queer media or “Thai Wind” , including in Australia, which has contributed to a broader international interest in Thai culture and entertainment.

Ms. Xueyin presented her doctoral research titled "How does fan engagement with Thai BL coupling fandom shape Chinese people's perception of gender and sexuality?" She analyzed the role of coupling fandom among Chinese fans and the influence of Thai entertainment media on perceptions of gender identity and sexuality in China. Additionally, she explored the representation of LGBTQ+ characters in Thai series and films, as well as the factors driving the popularity of BL and GL content in the Chinese market.

Meanwhile, Ms. Rujeela shared her perspective as an Australian fan of Thai media, discussing the cultural connections between Thailand and international audiences. She also emphasized the role of Thai series and films in promoting a greater understanding and acceptance of gender diversity worldwide.

The event fostered an engaging exchange of ideas among participants, including academics, film industry professionals, and Thai media enthusiasts. Beyond exploring Thailand’s entertainment industry, the panel also served as an important platform to raise awareness of LGBTQ+ rights and equality in a global context.
